| Sad News From The Speedway
Matthew Contey, a young New Jerseyan driver looking to make a name for himself at Solstice, has tragically succumbed to injuries sustained in a Lap 21 crash at Charlotte Motor Speedway at the latter's Solstice Retro Series event. He started eighth and ran consistently all night long, and found himself in sixth by the halfway point. Ahead of him, Adam Codol suddenly lost it on exit to Turn 4, and overcorrected into the path of Steve Rada. Contey was clipped by Rada's spinning car, and then ran into from the passenger's side by Josh Chin. His car started to flip violently, and then stuck itself into the catch fence in the second dogleg on the front stretch. The car was quickly extracted from the scene, and Contey was airlifted to the Carolinas Medical Center, but was pronounced dead on arrival at 9:45 ET.
The race was run to completion despite a gaping hole in the catch fence where Contey's car had hit, and Ryan Williams emerged victorious. After the race, a public announcement was made announcing Contey's passing. The Charlotte Police Department is still investigating the cause of death, suspected to be from blunt force trauma. Contey left behind a career of mediocrity, and despite having never won a race, he was still an active person in the racing world.
An unconfirmed number of fans were reportedly hit by debris from Contey's car, and are also being treated at the Carolinas Medical Center, some in critical condition.
UPDATE: Despite having passed away, a translucent Contey spoke at the Solstice press conference immediately after the race had ended. He promised to race in tomorrow's Solstice Dash event also at Charlotte, and then again next week in the Solstice Retro event at Martinsville. "I made a promise to myself that I would stick around the racing world as long as I could," Contey said. "I'm going to make sure that I see fit to doing so." | |
